WSBA News has been honored again by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters (PAB) and the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcaster's Association (PAPBA). Two first place awards and two second place awards were presented by the PAPBA at its convention in April. The best local newscast award was presented by the PAB at its awards luncheon in early May.
First place honors from the PAPBA for news or sports talk program went to "The Gary Sutton Show," Gary Sutton, Host and Stu Leppo, Producer. The judges said "Nice local feel. Good mix of local news and weather along with longer, more in-depth segments."
First place for sportscast went to Jeffrey Schiffman. The judges thought his sportscast was thorough with a good mix of scores and stories.
Second place for regularly scheduled newscast went to Cathy Clark and Bill Saunders. The judges said it was a nice mix of news. Good use of natural sound and news maker interviews.
The news team also received second place for spot news. Honors went to Cathy Clark, Reporter; Bill Saunders, Anchor; and Gary Sutton, Show Host for their coverage of the lockdown at the York County School of Technology less than two weeks after the Amish school shooting in Lancaster County. The judges said "Good team coverage. Reporter on-scene gave good description of events. Good follow-up with news makers like police and parents."
The PAB contest was judged by broadcasters in Virginia and honored the WSBA News Team, including Cathy Clark, Bill Saunders, Dennis Edwards and Mark McKenzie for newscasts broadcast in December, January and February.
